What George Campbell Could Offer West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have shown interest in a new addition to their backline, with CF Montréal defender George Campbell reportedly on the way to move to the Championship club.

The 24-year-old center-back, who emerged as a transfer target for Albion earlier this window, began his professional journey with Atlanta United before making the switch to the Canadian side Montréal.

Campbell has spent his entire playing career in North America, and his performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him a call-up to the U.S. national team setup.

He’s been on the radar of several Championship clubs throughout the summer, with Bristol City among the teams believed to have shown serious interest.

But what exactly does Campbell bring to the table for West Brom?

His path started at Georgia United before he joined the Atlanta United academy, one of the most respected clubs in MLS circles.

He made an early impression with Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship, which shows his athleticism and defensive awareness with the reserve squad.

Campbell earned a homegrown contract with Atlanta United in July 2019, and later secured a move to CF Montréal in 2022 for a reported fee close to $200,000.

Since joining the Canadian club, he has played close to 70 appearances, becoming a regular presence in the club’s defensive line.

To many Albion fans and analysts, Campbell may not be a household name.

However, those familiar with Major League Soccer have started weighing in on what the defender could bring to The Hawthorns if the move is completed.

MLS analyst Jeremy Peterman offered his perspective on social media, calling Campbell one of the most underrated signings of the summer window.

“Campbell is physically ready for the Championship and adds another dimension to WBA’s CB room: outstanding ball-carrying,” Peterman posted on X.

“He instantly becomes the most progressive CB that the Baggies have at their disposal. Great pickup, expecting fee to be in the £1M range.”
