West Bromwich Albion are nearing a deal to sign American defender George Campbell from Major League Soccer side CF Montréal.
Campbell, who turned 24 in May, is a versatile defensive option capable of playing at centre-back and right-back. He currently features for the Canadian-based club CF Montréal in the MLS.
Sources close to the situation suggest Ryan Mason’s West Brom are finalizing details of the move as talks enter an advanced stage. The club is eager to reinforce the backline before the new Championship season.
Other Championship clubs have reportedly been monitoring Campbell’s availability this summer, including Stoke City, though Albion appear to be leading the race for his signature.
The defender is still under contract with Montréal, and the transfer fee is expected to be in the region of £1 million.
Born in Pennsylvania, Campbell came through Atlanta United’s academy and was considered one of MLS’s standout young defenders during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
He made the switch to CF Montréal ahead of the 2023 campaign in a deal worth approximately £300,000. Since joining, he has played consistently and even worn the captain’s armband on occasion.
CF Montréal finished last season in eighth place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
Campbell has featured 16 times during the current 2025 season. His most recent appearance came on July 6 when he was brought on as a halftime substitute during a 4-1 loss to Inter Miami—a match that included stars like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
Montréal’s form has dipped significantly this year, and they currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Campbell was not in the squad for Sunday’s visit to Orlando City, the former club of Daryl Dike.
While personal terms appear to be agreed, a medical has yet to take place as both clubs work through final negotiations and travel logistics.
Campbell’s only appearance for the United States came in a January friendly, a 3-1 win over Venezuela.
His arrival would provide much-needed depth on the right side of Albion’s defense, where Darnell Furlong remains the most experienced option. Campbell also brings cover at centre-back, joining a group that already includes Nat Phillips, a recent summer signing from Liverpool.
In addition to Phillips, Albion’s central defensive unit includes last season’s player of the year Torbjørn Heggem, emerging talent Caleb Taylor, and veteran Kyle Bartley.
