Real Madrid have made a rare exception to their internal contract rules to secure the future of star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, which ensures the Belgian shot-stopper remains a central figure in their plans.
The move represents a shift from Los Blancos’ traditional stance when it comes to dealing with players over the age of 30, signaling just how valued Courtois is within the club hierarchy.

Courtois, who has been sidelined with long-term injury but remains one of the top goalkeepers in the world, has agreed to a fresh contract that adds 12 months to his current deal. Previously set to expire in the summer of 2026, the new agreement now runs through 2027.
But it’s the terms of the renewal that have drawn the most attention.
According to Cortegana’s report, Real Madrid have broken their own policy of offering only one-year rolling extensions to players aged 30 and above. Courtois, who turned 32 in May, has now received a multi-year commitment — with an improved salary kicking in immediately from this summer.
This makes Courtois’ new deal effectively a two-year agreement, rather than the club’s usual short-term extension.
Real Madrid’s decision underlines both their confidence in Courtois’ long-term fitness and his importance in the squad, even with the summer arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan and the development of back-up options.
Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has since become one of the club’s most consistent performers. His superb display was in the 2021/22 Champions League campaign.
As they have adjusted their usual policy to accommodate him, the club have sent a clear message: Courtois remains indispensable at the Bernabéu.
