Canadian midfielder Nathan Saliba is set to take the next step in his career with a move to Europe, he will be joining the Belgian top club R.S.C. Anderlecht on a four-year contract. The deal was first reported by TSN’s Matthew Scianitti and marks a great development in Saliba’s football journey.
Saliba will officially link up with his new club once Canada concludes its Gold Cup campaign. The 20-year-old has featured prominently for the national team during the tournament, scoring twice — once in the opening match against Honduras and again in a key group stage draw against Curacao. Those actions have brought his total senior caps for Canada to five.
At the club level, Saliba has been a consistent for CF Montréal over the past three seasons. He has made 68 appearances in Major League Soccer and contributed two goals during his time with the Canadian side. His steady move from domestic leagues to the European leagues haas reflected a growing talking point among Canadian internationals.
Belgium has become a favored destination for Canadian talent breaking into European football. Saliba now joins fellow internationals Jonathan David (KAA Gent), Tajon Buchanan (Club Brugge), and Promise David (Union Saint-Gilloise), all of whom have found success in the Belgian Pro League.
Anderlecht, historically one of Belgium’s most successful clubs, have claimed the league title 34 times — more than any other team in the country. As of Tuesday, the Brussels-based club sits fourth in the table and remains in contention for both league and European honors next season.
