Knicks Skip Kevin Durant Trade Talks, Focus on Roster Depth

The New York Knicks won’t pursue Kevin Durant despite trade rumors. With KD on the block, New York prioritizes roster depth over blockbuster deals.

The New York Knicks have made their stance clear: Kevin Durant isn’t in their plans. Despite the Phoenix Suns reportedly shopping the 15-time All-Star, New York is choosing to stay the course rather than pursue a high-profile trade.

Talks linking the Knicks to a potential move for Durant generated buzz earlier in the week, with fans and analysts alike debating the pros and cons of bringing the veteran forward to Madison Square Garden.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith wanted the Knicks to get Kevin Durant

Not everyone agreed with the Knicks’ decision. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith voiced his frustration on-air, calling the franchise’s position a mistake. The veteran broadcaster is known for his strong opinions, and this was no exception.

“Of course, this is a mistake. This is idiocy, to be very honest with you,” Smith said during an episode of ESPN’s First Take. “Anybody that has a speck of knowledge about the game of basketball, you can’t justify not wanting KD on your squad. There is no system he can not play in. There is no system that he can’t complement, this is KD!”

Durant would have certainly increased the Knicks’ title odds after they just had their most successful season in 25 years. To acquire him will come at the expense of core players such as Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, and Durant’s old age will make it in such a move.

The Knicks don’t need to make a mighty move

At 36, Durant remains one of the top scorers in this league. He scored an average of 26.6 points per game in this past season for Phoenix, which shows that he can still produce at a high level. But the Knicks are approaching this offseason with patience and discipline, rather than swinging for the fences.

Instead of aiming for a superstar acquisition, the front office has decided to focus on the improvement of the team, to also strengthen the bench and to add more veteran experience players that could be the key to building on last season’s playoff games.

Having Durant would have been nice to add to the team, but it is safe to say that the Knicks are choosing the right direction by avoiding a big deal for him.
