As the NBA offseason begins, the Detroit Pistons are already making waves in the rumor mill, which has emerged as a team that has shown serious interest in Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Detroit, fresh off a season that ended with a first-round playoff exit at the hands of the New York Knicks, is determined to build on its abilities. With promising talent in Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson, the Pistons are shifting their focus toward acquiring complementary pieces that can help them climb higher in the Eastern Conference next season.
While names like Naz Reid and Myles Turner have floated around in connection with Detroit, new betting odds suggest that Kuminga may be the most realistic and impactful target. According to sportsbook Bovada, the Pistons are among the top four contenders to land the 22-year-old forward, trailing only the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, and Chicago Bulls.
Kuminga, who will be a restricted free agent this summer, averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game over 47 regular season appearances last year. He shot 45.4 percent from the floor and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc—solid numbers for a player whose season was interrupted by an ankle injury that sidelined him for over two months.
The Warriors, despite their veteran-laden player, could be open to a sign-and-trade involvement of Kuminga if they determine that his fit within Steve Kerr’s system no longer aligns with their goals. After all, following the return of Jimmy Butler and a stretch of inconsistent minutes, Kuminga’s role with Golden State diminished significantly.
For Detroit, this could be the perfect opportunity. The Pistons are in need of an aggressive scorer who can create his own shot, and Kuminga’s physical tools and this could make him the best player for this role.
Adding Kuminga would allow the Pistons to reinforce their youth-oriented rebuild while simultaneously injecting more firepower into a lineup that occasionally struggled to generate offense outside of Cunningham’s playmaking.
If Detroit can pull off a deal, the acquisition of Kuminga would signal that the front office is serious about fast-tracking its climb up the East standings. It may not be a championship-or-bust season just yet, but with a core of skilled young players and the right veteran additions, Detroit could quickly become one of the league’s most exciting young teams.
