NEW YORK — A heartfelt moment unfolded at Yankee Stadium on Sunday when Cody Bellinger connected with a young fan before delivering one of the highlights of the Yankees’ 12-5 win over the Oakland Athletics.
Just before stepping into the batter’s box in the fifth inning, Bellinger stood in the on-deck circle when a voice caught his attention from the stands near the Yankees’ dugout.
According to Bellinger, a mother sitting close to home plate called out to him: “Hey Cody, big fan, last time you gave him a fist bump you hit a homer.” Looking up, Bellinger recognized the pair and walked over to offer another fist bump to the young boy.
Moments later, he faced left-handed pitcher Hogan Harris and sent the very first pitch soaring into the right-field seats for a three-run homer — his latest in a strong stretch for the Yankees.
As he rounded the bases, Bellinger admitted the moment struck a deeper chord.
“I had chills,” he shared after the game. “I had to go show him some love. Honestly, that was just a really cool moment.”
The home run not only helped extend New York’s lead but also created a touching exchange between player and fan that stood out in an otherwise high-scoring affair.
