Brad Stevens Provides Clarity on Al Horford’s Future After Lakers Rumors

After they have fallen short in their bid to repeat as NBA champions and parted ways with some key players, the Boston Celtics are entering a phase of transition. With a reshaped roster and limited salary cap flexibility, the future of veteran forward Al Horford remains uncertain.

Amid ongoing speculation surrounding the 18-year NBA veteran, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens confirmed this week that contract offers were extended to both Horford and fellow big man Luke Kornet. The team had hoped to keep at least one of their dependable frontcourt pieces, especially with Jayson Tatum still recovering from a serious Achilles injury.

However, Stevens acknowledged that Horford is now unlikely to return. The veteran is weighing the possibility of retirement or a potential move to a Western Conference contender. According to a report by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Horford is expected to choose between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

“We made offers to both Luke and Al,” Stevens told reporters Tuesday. “We would have loved to have both of them back. I’d say that’s unlikely at this point. The only reason I haven’t talked about Al is because it’s not final… If he were to go and play somewhere else, I think he’s an all-time Celtic.”

Now 39, Horford is evaluating his options as interest grows from playoff-calibre teams, including the Warriors and Denver Nuggets. If a Boston return doesn’t materialize, to step away from the game entirely is also a consideration for the five-time All-Star.

During the 2024-25 season, Horford remained a valuable contributor for Boston, posting averages of 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. His presence in the locker room and steady leadership have been praised by teammates and coaches alike, particularly during the Celtics’ Finals run two years ago.

Celtics fans may have to brace for the end of an era, as it remains uncertain whether Horford will wear the green and white again—or if his time in Boston has officially come to a close.
