Boston Celtics’ Next Move? Anfernee Simons May Be on the Trading Block Already

The Boston Celtics are wasting no time reshuffling their roster after a challenging start to the NBA offseason. With financial pressure mounting, they’ve already parted ways with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, and veteran big man Al Horford may not be far behind.

In a recent trade move, Boston sent Jrue Holiday to Portland, which brought in high-scoring guard Anfernee Simons. At first glance, the acquisition seemed like a solution to Jayson Tatum’s injury absence, a chance to slot Simons alongside Jaylen Brown and keep the offense rolling.

But according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Celtics may already be looking to flip Simons before he ever suits up in green and white.

“I have talked to other teams who have said they are actively trying to trade Anfernee Simons,” Windhorst said on The Hoops Collective. “Whether they can or not is another thing.”

Simons, who averaged just under 20 points and five assists per game in his final season with the Trail Blazers, brings undeniable scoring ability. His explosiveness at all three levels gives any team offensive versatility. However, his defensive limitations have long been a concern, and that may weigh into Boston’s willingness to move on.

The financial situation is also a key factor. Simons is entering the final year of a $27.7 million contract. With the Celtics projected to be around $20 million over the luxury tax threshold, the front office appears to be trimming payroll to avoid the league’s punitive second apron restrictions.

If Simons is moved again, it would signal a clear direction from Celtics President Brad Stevens: this offseason is about flexibility, not just firepower.
