Austin FC II clawed back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers 2 and then edged the hosts 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout to claim the extra point in MLS NEXT Pro action.

The visitors came out strong, controlling the tempo and creating more chances throughout the first half. Despite that, it was Portland who struck first through Gage Guerra in the 21st minute, converting after being set up by Sawyer Jura and Alex Bamford.

Austin FC II responded late in the second half. With just 13 minutes left in regulation, Micah Burton found the back of the net for a second consecutive game. The equaliser came from a well-placed cross delivered by Ervin Torres, another product of the Austin FC Academy.

As the match wore on, tensions rose. Guerra, Portland’s goalscorer, was shown a red card in the final stages. That gave Austin FC II a spark, and they pressed for a winner, creating several late chances. But with no breakthrough before the final whistle, the match was decided from the penalty spot — the sixth shootout of the season for the Texas side.

Goalkeeper Charlie Farrar made a crucial save during the shootout, keeping Austin in the hunt after both sides converted four of their first five attempts. When it came to sudden death, Diego Abarca stepped up and calmly slotted the decisive penalty, lifting Austin FC II two spots in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings.
