Anthony Davis is on track for training camp with the Dallas Mavericks after undergoing surgery to repair a detached retina, according to a report by Shams Charania. The All-Star center sustained the injury during the 2024–25 season and is expected to recover in time for preseason preparations in Dallas. Davis joined the Mavericks midway through the campaign in a headline-making trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Davis has dealt with multiple eye-related injuries in recent years, including several corneal abrasions. In one incident last November, he was poked in the eye while contesting a dunk and had to leave the game. Although Davis wore protective goggles during his high school days, he has opted not to wear them at the professional level. His history with injuries, especially recurring eye issues, has reignited questions about his durability, especially following his move to Dallas.
At the time of the trade, Davis was already managing an abdominal strain. His debut with the Mavericks was further delayed by a left adductor strain that sidelined him for over a month. His absence during that stretch coincided with a significant dip in the team’s performance. Nevertheless, Davis remains a vital part of the team’s plans and is expected to play a leadership role as the Mavericks integrate No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg into the NBA fold after securing the top spot in this year’s draft lottery.
