MONTREAL – CF Montreal’s slump extended to five consecutive losses on Saturday night at Stade Saputo, as they fell 3-0 to the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer action.
New England (6-4-5) scored three times in the second half, capitalizing on a red card issued to Montreal forward Giacomo Vrioni late in the first half.
“I just want to say that I’m proud of these guys, of how they fought for the entire game,” said CF Montreal interim head coach Marco Donadel in a brief 50-second post-game press conference. “In the first half, 11 versus 11, I think we dominated. Even when we were down to 10 men at the end of the first half and into the second half, I just wanted to say that.
The Montreal head coach declined to answer questions from the media, saying he wanted to stay on the bench for the upcoming games and avoid disqualification.
No players were made available after the game, with the team’s media relations department describing it as “a club decision.”
Donadel and the team’s frustration likely stemmed from the straight red card given to Vrioni in the 36th minute for what was classified as violent conduct against New England defender Keegan Hughes. Vrioni, a former Revolution forward acquired by Montreal from New England last January, had been battling Hughes for the ball when he kicked him. Hughes went down in pain along the New England sideline.
Until that point, Montreal had largely dictated the game, outshooting New England 8-2 in the first 45 minutes and holding 61 percent of possession. Despite that dominance, the team couldn’t convert its chances, most notably when Caden Clark had an opportunity inside the box off a Dante Sealy free kick in the 23rd minute, only for it to be blocked by Revolution defender Tanner Beason.
Montreal’s Nathan Saliba, who registered the team’s only shot on target in the first half, and Vrioni both had opportunities in the following minutes, but neither effort found the target.
After the break, New England quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage.
After winning a free kick after being fouled by Montreal’s Sealy, Revolution midfielder Peyton Miller accepted a cross from defender Ilay Feingold. Miller froze Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, scoring his first career MLS goal with a left-footed deflection to the bottom right corner of the net.
The Revolution extended their lead in the 55th minute when Feingold made a run into the right side of the box and finished with his left foot past Sirois.
Feingold found the net again late in the match, scoring from the right side of the box off a lateral pass from Miller in the 87th minute. All three of the Israeli international’s goals this season have come in the last two games.
With the team now at the halfway mark of its 2025 MLS season, Montreal (1-11-5) has yet to secure a win at home, holding a record of 0-4-3 on home turf. The club remains at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, having collected just eight points from a possible 51.
For New England, the victory extended their MLS unbeaten streak to nine matches (5-0-4) since April 12. It also marked their seventh consecutive result on the road, matching a franchise record set in 2019.
Revolution goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic recorded his seventh clean sheet of the season, contributing to New England’s strong defensive performance in the 2025 MLS campaign. The team has conceded only 14 goals in its first 15 matches, the best mark in the league.
Piette Reaches 200 MLS Appearances
Midfielder Samuel Piette became the first player in Montreal’s history to reach 200 career MLS appearances, all with the club. Already the franchise leader in games played, the Le Gardeur, Quebec native also leads Montreal in career starts (178) and minutes played (15,534). Saturday’s match marked his 225th appearance across all competitions for the club, moving him past goalkeeper Evan Bush into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list since Montreal’s founding in 1993.
Card trouble continued as Montreal’s Saliba and Joel Waterman each received a yellow card, joining Vrioni’s red card incident. Both Saliba and Waterman were already on MLS caution accumulation warnings, meaning the bookings will likely lead to suspensions for the team’s next match.
